1. What motivated you to run for Naperville Mayor?

After Mayor Pradel announced his retirement, residents encouraged me to run for Mayor and continue being their voice at City Hall. This is an “all or nothing” race for me; I promise to use my experience to improve our reputation and quality of life for the residents and businesses.

2. If elected to serve your community, will you accept health care benefits from the City of Naperville?

Yes, I will be accepting the insurance; I will enroll in the same program offered to city employees and requires individuals to contribute 20% of the insurance cost.

3. If elected, how much time per week are you willing to give to prepare for City Council meetings, budget workshops and liaison appointments on boards/commissions?

Currently, I am averaging 24 hours per week, and I will average more with additional mayoral responsibilities. I will also schedule regular office hours and plan to institute a monthly meeting over coffee at City Hall for residents.

4. What quality and/or skill set will you bring to a nonpartisan City Council?

My background brings a wealth of public and private sector experience to the position. During my many years on Council, I have served on numerous boards/commissions. In the private sector, I have held numerous positions that were finance/controller-based and have successfully owned two companies.

5. What do you consider to be the three biggest issues facing the City today?

While balancing the budget each year, other key issues:

  • A: Improve traffic flow throughout Naperville.
  • B: Managing the continuing growth of Naperville while preserving the high standard and quality of life that Naperville residents expect.
  • C: Taking action on issues of affordable housing, senior services and improving resident communication.

6. Do you favor term limits for City Council and other local/state governing bodies?

Yes. However, I believe “term limits” is defined by the word “elections”. The residents should determine how long an elected official serves by choosing in each election whether to retain or replace that individual.

7. Name one contribution you have made to our city that you think was most significant of your community service to date.

I believe the most significant contribution to our community I have made is my accessibility to both our residents and our businesses. My accessibility has contributed to my help in resolving numerous issues (big and small) during my time on City Council.

9. Realistically and fiscally speaking, if you could change/improve one thing in the city, what would it be?

Naperville’s success has created traffic congestion throughout the City. Over the years, the City has established new roads and widened intersections, but more work still needs to be done. I will support increasing our road maintenance budget from the current $11.6 million in order to fund improvements.

10. How do hope to be perceived by city staff, city manager, other council members and constituents?

Over the years, I have established successful working relationships with both city staff and Council, which I’m confident will continue going forward. In the role of Mayor, I will continue to be accessible to and supportive of both the people I work with and serve.

11. What business development needs can you identify?

Business development is critical for Naperville’s ongoing success. The need to expand awareness of local businesses and the services they offer residents is vital. Programs like the Naperville Development Partnership (NPD) Restaurant Guide serves this purpose, and can be expanded into other business categories.

12. What can the City of Naperville do better to retain and attract businesses?

We need to be welcoming, supportive and accommodating to all businesses that want to operate in Naperville. Leveraging our existing tools (e.g. variances, code amendments, and incentives), we can expand our business community while also closely analyzing and protecting current businesses.

13. What can the City Council do to help keep real estate and property values in check?

The reality is that the Council has no control over market values. As with our country, much of the city’s economy is driven by basic economic principles of supply and demand. What the Council can control is continuing to make Naperville a desirable place to live, work and play.

14. What do you think the City Council could do to help keep Naperville affordable for homeowners of all ages?

To keep Naperville affordable, we must continue to diversify the tax base. This includes increasing the number of businesses operating here, as well as embracing innovation that reduces expenses of basic services for local residents. This will allow us to maintain the high standard residents expect going forward.

15. What service provided by the City of Naperville do you deem most important? Least important?

Since our residents are the #1 priority, I believe our public safety services are most important. These include police, fire, ambulance, garbage/recycling, snow removal, water, sewer, road and sidewalk repair all while maintaining a balanced budget. I cannot think of any city service that residents would consider “least important”.

16. Are you a member of a service club or nonprofit board of directors that receives SECA funds or other grants from the City of Naperville? NO If yes, which one(s)?

I have never been a member of any service club or non-profit board which receives SECA funds from the City of Naperville. I believe any membership would be a conflict of interest because the City Council allocates these funds.

17. What city amenity is most important and how do you think it should be funded/raise revenue?

Our diverse community dictates we provide a broad range of amenities; their importance is determined by each individual’s perspective. For this reason, I will continue to support a wide range of quality amenities to meet our residents needs. These amenities are predominantly funded from sales tax revenue.

18. How would you qualify Special Events and Cultural Amenities (SECA) applicants for funding?

Events presented by the applicants should provide to our community either a cultural, entertainment or physical fitness value that acknowledges our community’s diversity. I will ensure that all applicants have equal opportunity for funding to promote a successful event with minimal disruption to everyday life.

19. What is your opinion of the bidding and letting process at the City of Naperville?

In the past, I have initiated reviews to assure participation of local businesses and will continue to do so. To ensure a fair and equitable bidding process, the City must improve communication with our local business community to attract bidders, while providing education in how to participate in the process.
